The First Levenshulme Pride Weekender – A Free Celebration of The LGBT+ Community
Levenshulme Pride as a concept has been milling about for some years. There’s a contented and long established community of LGBT+ people who have been part of the wider community of business owners, allotment tenders and market goers that reside happily in Levenshulme. It was the disturbance of two of those residents happily walking down the ‘GAY6’ holding hands, being called ‘faggots’ by some random which prompted a big swell of support for them on social media and a desire to do something positive.
It was only a matter of time before an idea became a meeting and a meeting became a committee and a committee became a force to be reckoned with and just like that (months and months of hard work by all…) the first Levenshulme Pride has emerged for us all to enjoy on the 11th, 12th and 13th of August. We can’t wait to enjoy all the hard work.
Who’s Behind Levenshulme Pride?
Sparked off by local resident Robert Fleming who arranged the initial meetings at the always gay friendly Klondyke (also Levenshulme Pride HQ for the event) and pulled together the core team of organisers. Levenshulme Community Association chair Jeremy Hoad has played a supporting role as chair of Levenshulme Pride along with other community groups and local businesses rallying around to help.
It really has been all grassroots, with life long residents like Sharlene Decourcey pulling together bits n bobs, helping with a bumper raffle prize selection and spreading the word with her local knowledge, Lisa Effberg who helped arrange the Pie n Mash up event and Ali Hanbury, a new resident to Levenshulme who brings with her support and expertise from her work at The Proud Trust.
“I’m excited to be helping organise Levenshulme Pride. I moved here last year knowing how positive and community orientated it is here. Sadly prejudice exists everywhere but the response from residents, businesses and local groups has been brilliant! I can’t wait for the weekend to meet many more people and feel part of something so special.”
There’s been a real push to get the whole high street involved in some way, the shop windows have been plastered with Levenshulme Pride posters, local radio ALL FM have been plugging away and local business sponsors have been key to making the event possible.
Levenshulme Pride Sponsors
It would be churlish not to name drop the key supporters and local good guys who have given their cash and goods to make the event happen. Well done all, here’s a few words from the sponsors:
“We’ve been established for 10 years and have built a solid and reliable reputation covering Levenshulme and the whole of South Manchester and Trafford. From one room to full house decoration and external work M&R offer a reliable, friendly and trustworthy experience and are delighted to be involved with Levenshulme Pride”
“Lawrence has backed our idea from the start, and it’s great to have such huge support. The Union Pub will be their venue of choice for the Pride Weekender and if anyone has noticed….it’s had a little make over today (rainbow flags!) “
“We’re based in the Antiques Village on Stockport Road, our speciality is painted furniture using environmentally friendly Frenchic and we also offer a bespoke upholstery service. I’m a local resident and really proud to be a member of the organisation team too.”
“With ‘The Levenshulme’ being one of our popular public houses in the Manchester area we are very pleased to announce we are proud to be supporting the first ever Levenshulme Pride. The Levenshulme hosts a wide range of artists as we continue the building of the bridge with the LGBTQ Community.”
Shine is a main sponsor of Levenshulme Pride. A well loved local hairdressers with big hearts and bags of community spirit, they are really excited to be part of the event. They’re part of the Inspire to Shine march along the A6 on Saturday and are hosting a Mad Hatters Tea Party 12.00-16.00 on Sunday 13th August. Everyone is welcome.
